Giants vs Eagles- Preview & Prediction

The Giants got lucky. Riverboat Ron, coach of the Washington team, decided to go for 2 on the last touchdown of the game. The Giants were up 20-19. The extra point would have tied it. The Giants defense made a strong stop on the rollout by Allen. Just like that the Gmen had their first victory in the Joe Judge era. Yes it is a rare occurrence for Giants fans. The last such victory happened on 12/22/19, 302 days ago!

The Giants are facing their number one nemesis, the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night. Undoubtedly, the Giants have more trouble with this team than any other. There is a long history between these 2 teams. I can write a whole paper on it but everyone remembers the painful, “Miracle in the New Meadowlands” in 2010. The Giants had a 21-point lead that they blew with 8 minutes left in the game. The comeback was completed with the one and done, 7th round pick, punter Matt Dodge. He was told to kick the ball out of bounds but he kicked a line drive to DeSean Jackson who ran back the punt to win the game and knock the Giants out of the playoffs.

The recent series is bad for the Giants. The Giants are 4-20 vs the Eagles their last 24 games. The last game they won was 11/16/16. The only other wins came in 2011. 2012, and 2013. The Giants have not won in Philadelphia in SIX years.

The game plan for the Giants to win is to put pressure on Carson Wentz. The Eagles offensive line is decimated:?Andre Dillard and Brandon Brooks are out for the season. Jason Peters is on IR and Jack Driscoll is out. Wentz has been sacked an NFL high of 25 times. The pressure has caused Wentz to throw 9 interceptions and have 11 turnovers. In many ways this year he is similar to Daniel Jones . He has had the turnover problem like Jones. However, he can run the ball like Jones when he has to, Wentz has 171 rushing yards. He has had at least 37 yards in the last 4 games. Jones has 204 yards on the year bolstered by his 49-yard run last week vs the Washington team. The Giants invigorated pass rush will have to take advantage of this bad line. Wentz will have to make quick throws.

For the third year in a row Wentz’s weapons are going down in droves. DeSean Jackson comes back after missing 3 games. He can stretch the defense even if he is a decoy and really give the Eagles a new dimension. Alshon Jeffrey has missed every game. Both starting tight ends are out. Goedert got hurt in week 3 and still is out. Perennial stand out, Zach Ertz, who is having a down year, is out too. This springboards Richard Rodgers as the main tight end target. Travis Fulgham has become the main target and one of the fantasy football main waiver wire additions this year. He has 18 receptions, 284 yards and 3 touchdowns. I would think Bradberry covers him. The other targets are the non-descript, Ward, Arcega-Whiteside, and Hightower.

Wentz is resourceful. He became the first quarterback last year to throw for 4000 yards and not have 1 receiver who had 500 yards in receptions. Last year in week 14 vs the Giants it was next man up for Wentz who had the same devasting injuries. He was throwing to no names at the time, Greg Ward and Josh Perkins. Colin Cowherd, who has a national radio sports talk show, always says, “Wentz is throwing to lawn furniture and deck chairs”.

That game also had the NFL launch of running back, Boston Scott. He had 59 yards rushing and 1 touchdown in that game. He was even more effective in the pass game with 6 catches for 69 yards. Many of those were key catches to keep drives going. In the second game, week 17, he had even more impact, He had 54 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. He also had 4 catches for 84 yards. He is becoming the new Giant Killer since the last one, Brian Westbrook. He had the 2-yard touchdown after the obligatory Danny Turnover sack/fumble that was returned to the 2-yard line. The week 17 game was tied at 17 going into the 4th quarter., The Jones fumble blew the game wide open and the Eagles scored 10 points in a minute! The Jones turnover was the lasting memory for Giants fans stuck in their heads for the offseason. To make matters worse for the Eagles, their starting running back Miles Sanders, got hurt in last week’s game and he is out for this one. Once again Boston Scott is the lead runner for the Eagles. He will be spelled by Corey Clement who is mainly a third down back.

When the Giants have the ball, they will have to establish the run game. Freeman will need a big game. It will keep the pass rush off Jones. The Eagles have 21 sacks and will be looking to feast on Danny Turnover. Fletcher Cox will be after Jones. In 15 games vs the Giants , Fletcher Cox has 3 sacks, 10 QB hits and 40 QB hurries. The Eagles are 23rd vs the run and 13 vs the pass. The Eagles will have Darius Slay shadow Slayton. This is a big problem for the Giants. They really don’t have another receiver they can count on. They really need Shepard to be active from his injury. I’m out on Engram who has been invisible this year. He needs to step up. The 32-year-old, $10M/year Gettleman mistake, Tate has also done nothing this year. This was a stupid addition to the team because you already had a slot receiver, Shepard, making $9M/year.

The Giants have played better on the road the past 3 years. They are 15-3 against the spread on the road last 18 games. This is a lower scoring game. The Giants don’t have that one weapon right now that the Eagles fear. The one they have in Slayton will be blanketed by one of the top cover corners in Slay. The Eagles have been bad vs tight ends. For the Giants to win Engram needs to come out of the Witness Protection Program. In the end I go with history. Until the Giants can put a string of success vs the Eagles, I am picking against them. They will keep it close with the Eagles injuries. I am calling it Eagles 24 and the Giants 20. They have the disadvantage also of being the road team on a short week on Thursday night.
