2018 New York Football Giants Draft Picks: Dave Gettleman’s Drafting World

Here are the 2018 New York Giant Draft picks:

Thursday, April 26th

Round 1 – Pick #2: Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn State

Friday, April 27th

Round 2 – Pick #34: Will Hernandez, OG, UTEP

Round 3 – Pick #66: Lorenzo Carter, OLB, Georgia

Round 3 – Pick #69: B.J. Hill, DT , N.C.State

Saturday, April 28th

Round 4 – Pick #108: Kyle Lauletta, QB, Richmond

Round 5 – Pick #139: R.J. McIntosh, DT, Miami

If you take a look at the draft picks, they can be categorized in three areas. First, there are the immediate impact players who will start from day one. Saquon Barkley and Will Hernandez fit into this category. Second, there are players that will play this season but in a rotational capacity. All of the defensive players fit this bill. (Lorenzo Carter, B.J. Hill and R.H McIntosh.) Finally, you have the one player, Kyle Lauletta, who may represent the future of the organization.

A junior out of Miami, R.J. McIntosh clearly is a pick that fits the 3 – 4 defensive scheme the Giants recently switched to. McIntosh’s ability to react to the ball is what his play is all about. He is very quick in penetrating gaps in offensive blocking schemes to get to the opposing running backs before the play can materialize. McIntosh can also disrupt quarterback throws by batting balls down and closing passing lanes regularly. With a lot of opposing running backs rushing for over one hundred yards last season, the pick up of R.J. McIntosh becomes clear. He is an every down player which could result in a potential starting insertion if Damon Harrison or Dalvin Tomlinson endurance becomes a factor this year.

The drafting of Kyle Lauletta (Richmond) indicates that general manager Dave Gettlemen is not sold on last year’s pick of Davis Webb. (California). The big determination in establishing who the better quarterback may be is the passer rating, determined by a formula of passing attempts completed, total yards, touchdowns and interceptions. Although Webb’s passing rating is impressive at 135.6, Lauletta has a semi-close perfect rating of 153.2 (A perfect passer rating is 158.3.) It is understandable that the Richmond native has such a high rating when he has college franchise records of most career yards (10,465), and most passing and touchdown passes in a season (28) and career (73).

Kyle Lauletta seems like more of the complete quarterback than Eli Manning was out of the draft in 2004. He is an accurate thrower, mobile enough to avoid the rush, can run with the football and can stay in the pocket while under pressure to complete the play. Perhaps what shows Lauletta’s versatility in the position mire than anything else is having a 24 -12 record with four different offensive coordinators in his college career. Kyle Lauletta can easily become the heir apparent to Eli Manning.

From Paul Burke NYGunderground writer:  Kyle Lauletta is extremely smart.  Pedirgree.  I agree with Alex,  Lauletta is a versatile athlete.  From watching tape, he handles pressure well.   His arm is a big question mark.  This is why he slipped to the 4th round.  Otherwise, he could be a fantastic pick up for the Giants.

My take on what this means for Davis Webb:  Webb is a career back up.  Enough is known about Webb within the Timex Performance center.  Why pick Lauletta?  Stop feeding me this bullshit about value.

On these immediate draft grades:  I abhor the dishonest intellectual bogus grades on draft picks.  It is my belief, they need three years to pan out.  Honestly, we cannot put judgment on Gettleman’s picks until at least after the 2018 year.

Overall, on paper, the Giants drafted players which will improve this team.
